Non-Roster Invitations to Big League Camp

Postby rangerfan2008 on Sat Jan 16, 2010 11:14 am

The Rangers also announced non-roster invitations to big league camp for the following six minor leaguers: righthander Tanner Scheppers, lefthander Kasey Kiker, catcher Emerson Frostad, first baseman Justin Smoak, and first basemen-outfielders Mitch Moreland and Chad Tracy. They join righthanders Willie Eyre and Geoff Geary, lefthander Clay Rapada, catcher Kevin Richardson, and infielders Matt Brown, Esteban German, and Ray Olmedo as non-roster invites.

From Jamey's email....

I feel there are a few names missing....anyone else feel like that?

I noticed that too, I had two reactions -

Kiker and Chad Tracy are two guys this forum is generally down on and both got invites, it would seem the team is higher on them than the conventional wisdom of this board.

A lot of young, high upside pitchers like Perez, Beavan, Main and maybe a Beau Jones or two would normally get invites and haven't. I would bet its just a numbers thing, every catcher in the system gets an invite to handle all the pitchers and I bet they just don't have enough innings to go around for the 25+ pitchers coming to camp.

The Texas Rangers acquired right-handed pitcher Edwar Ramirez on Tuesday from the New York Yankees for cash considerations.

Ramirez, who turns 29 later this month, was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Feb. 28. He takes up the Rangers' final spot on the 40-man roster.

Ramirez had a 5.73 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 22 innings of work (20 relief appearances) with New York in 2009. He had two stints with the Yankees last season, pitching the rest of the time at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, where he went 1-5 with a 3.19 ERA in 29 games.
